jokes aside, mitt romney gain soming ground after beating president obama in last week's debate. joining us to talk about the numbers our political editor paul steinhauser. that's pretty stuff. they know how to go there. are we talking about much of a balance here after the debate? >> well, one poll does indicate a small bounce. take a look at this, suzanne. this is from gallop. they do that daily tracking poll. it's a seven-day poll. look what they did. they split it up in two. on the left column, those are the three days prior to last week's debate in denver. you see according to gallop, among registered voters nationwide, the president a five-point advantage. with the sampling area, look at the right. those are october 4th through 6th. the three days after the debate, and gallop indicates it's all tied up there. yeah, i mean, this one poll does indicate that mitt romney did get a bounce. of course, we're going to see a lot more national polls, a lot more polls. most importantly in the battle ground states later today, tomorrow, and wednesday ask thursday. keep your eyes on those state

or it could be weeks. it is a different tlesh hold than what the obama administration has laid out when you look carefully at what the president said at the general assembly, the most recent remarks on iran's nuclear program, he said the united states will not allow iran to have a nuclear bomb. i am paraphrasing to a certain degree. the word capability was not there. you did hear it from the israeli prime minister and today you're hearing it once again from mitt romney. mitt romney has been vague. he has gone back and forth on the issue of capability and sometimes he says it and sometimes he doesn't. today he is very cat goral in saying in a romney administration iran would not be able to have that capability of building a nuclear bomb which is significantly different than the threshold laid out by the president. >> and let's talk about syria which has been somewhat of a thorn in the side of this current sitting american president, and mr. romney, governor romney's view of syria, there was something in these prepared remarks that we excerpted that stood out to me and i want to get your take

as they have done in the last week. president obama is a great debater. the way i recall it, brooke, in the last presidential campaign, debates were not president obama's strengths. in fact, he's a much better speechmaker than he is a debater. and don't forget, he hasn't debated an awful lot lately. when the president of the united states and you're in the oval office, people tend not to debate with you an awful lot. you live in the presidential bubble. he hasn't been on stage with other people challenging him. so in a way, he sort of has got to get used to this routine over and over again, where as mitt romney has been on a debate stage an awful lot of times. >> if i recall, you were in a lot of those debates, he's tough, he's no wallflower that mitt romney. what is his biggest challenge, though? going into wednesday? >> the biggest challenge, i think mitt romney has got to do a couple of things. they're at odds with each other. first thing goehe's got to do i take on president obama directly when it comes to policy. what he has to tell the voters is i've got a better plan for an e
